Rav Meir Luria Visits Adopt-a-Kollel
Rav Meir Luria has been Rosh Kollel of Kollel Chelkas Yaakov in Bnei Brak for more than fifty years. Rav Luria, a talmid and chossid of the Nesivos Shalom of Slonim, is one of Bnei Brak’s well-known gedolei Torah. Over his more than 5 decades of Torah leadership he has guided thousands of yungeleit who look to him as their mentor in learning and psak halacha.
Rav Luria was in Lakewood last week for the first time. He came to participate in the wedding of a son of Rav Yisroel Miller, Rosh Kollel of Kollel Bais Avrohom Dovid of Toronto. Rav Miller learned under Rav Luria more than three decades ago and still considers himself a talmid. His kollel had adopted Rav Luria’s kollel, Kollel Chelkas Yaakov in Bnei Brak as their partner Kollel. In honor of the wedding of Rav Miller’s youngest son that coincided with the bein hazemanim, Rav Luria was able to make the trip.
While in Lakewood, Rav Luria felt compelled to visit Adopt-a-Kollel’s offices where he met with their leadership. “I was always amazed at the concept that people in America have invested so much effort to help others learn with no ulterior motives for themselves. I felt that I had to meet the people myself.” Rav Luria was flabbergasted by what he saw. “I could not believe that an entire office with so many employees was there for one reason, to facilitate yidden given tzedakah but at the same time they have no benift or pleasure from any of those donations.  Their entire purpose is to ensure that yungeleit throughout Eretz Yisrael are able to learn Torah and that roshei kollel should be able to meet their budgets. It is absolutely indescribable!”
